Operating System

An operating system acts as an interface between system software written in lower level language & application software written in high level language.

It help in managing all the resources of a system in an effective & efficient manner. Some of it’s funations are Memory management, CPU scheduling, I/O Device Management, Processor management, Secondary storage management etc.
It accesses the performance of system & generates reports. It communicates with all the components of a system  & help them in performing tasks as directed by the user.
It also takes necessary action in case of system breakdown & helps in troubleshooting problems by keeping all records in the form of files.
Thus it is an essential part of computer system and acts as a soul for the body or system. Some examples of os are dos, windows, linux, unix etc.
They are further classified into real time, time- sharing, multi user, multi tasking depending on the environment being used & purpose meant for.
